Kerala will be proactive in meeting MSME challenges: Oommen Chandy

The Kerala Government will adopt a proactive approach to meeting the challenges facing the MSME sector, Chief Minister, Shri. Oommen Chandy has said. The government wants to make Kerala the country’s hub for small and medium industry, he said while inaugurating the 'India MSME Summit 2012' at Kochi today.

Stressing on the need to give fresh impetus to MSMEs, the Chief Minister said the sector has helped the State to create wealth and job opportunities. There were 1.94 lakh micro, small and medium enterprises in the State as on March 2012. Of this, 1,280 were in food processing sector. Seafood processing units in Kerala account for around 40% of the installed capacity in the country as a whole, he added.

The Government reiterated its commitment to support new enterprises through various schemes such as cluster development and incentives for student entrepreneurs. Around 3,000 new enterprises are expected to come up at the Startup Village in Kalamassery over the next 8 years and this would provide a new face to Kerala as a job creator powered by MSMEs.

Speaking on the occassion, Shri. Tom Jose I.A.S, Managing Director, Kerala State Industrial Development Corporation (KSIDC), stressed on the vital role and contribution of MSMEs in employment generation and also the economic viability and stability they bring to the economy.

Shri. V.K. Mathews, Chairman, CII Kerala and Executive Chairman, The IBS Group, said that more than 25% of the whole country was directly or indirectly dependent on MSMEs.

Shri. Shyam Srinivasan, MD & CEO of Federal Bank described MSMEs as innovation engines for Corporate India.

The Summit and the exhibition, which were attended by over 450 delegates, was organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry in association with Department of Industries, Government of Kerala.

The MSME Summit is part of a series of initiatives being taken by the State Government to boost development.
